Fall River, MA – Lightolier, the leader in interior lighting for over a century, has responded to recent energy legislation including the California Building Energy Efficiency Standard (Title 24) and ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2004 with PowerTrip™, a Current Limiting Device for line voltage track lighting. PowerTrip is the first device of its kind available to the market. Today’s stringent energy codes define the maximum allowable wattage per square foot of a given lighting installation. Additionally, these codes contain a wattage calculation requirement for track lighting that is based on the linear length of installed track. By using the PowerTrip Current Limiter, the specified wattage rating of the device can be used in the energy calculations, rather than the watts per linear foot calculation. PowerTrip enables users to tailor their track installation to the specific required wattage and avoid the watts-per-foot “penalty” of energy codes. PowerTrip is designed for use with Lytespan® Radius®, Basic® and Advent® Track.
“Track lighting remains a popular choice for businesses, but it is strictly regulated by Title 24 and similar pending legislation,” says Ken Mackenzie, Vice President & General Manager of Lightolier’s Track Lighting Business Unit. “PowerTrip was specifically developed to make track fully usable within the legislated guidelines.” Jim Benya of Benya Lighting, who wrote the relevant passage in California’s Title 24, says, “PowerTrip will pay for itself in saved electrical costs and installation labor, and in the process, allow users to use track lighting the way it was intended: high flexibility with low expense. It’s a significant benefit.”
PowerTrip replaces both standard Live-End and In-Line track power feeds and installs easily. Users select PowerTrip according to the total wattage of all fixtures to be used on each circuit of the track. PowerTrip connectors contain a miniature electromagnetic circuit breaker that limits the current load on the track to specified amperage/wattage. Exceeding the rating of the PowerTrip device by increasing fixture wattage or count breaks the circuit and shuts off power to the track. Removing the excess load and resetting the PowerTrip breaker restores it. PowerTrip is integral to the track, tamperproof to prevent removal by unauthorized personnel, and clearly marked with the wattage rating to allow easy inspection.
